ABOUT WORKSHOP

This hands-on-workshop is designed to support students and teaching assistants in improving the effectiveness of practical work through using, tailoring and managing practical activities in the field of microbiology, biotechnology, immunology, biochemistry or molecular biology. The program encompasses advance techniques such as PCR, SDS – PAGE, Blue-white selection, Radial Immuno Diffusion Assay and Western Blotting through extensive personal support throughout the program.

COURSE CONTENT

• PCR: mechanism, sample preparation, programming, amplification and analysis of the PCR product.
• Agarose gel electrophoresis: casting the gel, loading of DNA sample, migration of DNA, staining and visualization.
• SDS-PAGE: reagents preparation, gel castings, sample preparation, loading and running, staining of gels, protein bands analysis and results Interpretation.
• Radial Immunodiffusion Assay: Quantitate the amount of antigen in a sample
• Western Blotting: Detect and analyze protein by antigen antibody interaction
• GFP based recombinant selection: Screen recombinant bacteria

ABOUT DEPARTMENT OF MICROBIOLOGY

Microbiology is the study of bacteria, viruses, fungi and protozoa. On a Microbiology degree program at School of Science, RK University, students study microbes at a cellular level and learn about their interactions with higher organisms, including the way in which microbes cause disease. This unique program gives students an understanding of the basis of immune recognition and vaccine design – infectious diseases and methods of control – microbial biotechnology, and parasitology. Students also develop an understanding of the importance of microbiology in environmental, agricultural and industrial settings. Microbiology is a discipline of enormous importance and research in this discipline has been revolutionized by new and exciting technologies such as proteomics, genomics, bioinformatics and genetic engineering. Our students suit for jobs in the area of Medical microbiology, Agricultural microbiology, Industrial microbiology, Food and Dairy microbiology and also in Marine microbiology.
