Thermobreakers (Thermowall)
Information and Rules
Event Description
-
● Event Overview:
Thermowall is a technical event where students demonstrate their understanding of thermal conductivity. Participants will build a wall of dimensions 30cm x 21cm using either a single material or composite material, with a maximum thickness of 10mm. Each participant’s wall will be tested in a closed chamber with a thermal load applied. The temperature on both sides of the wall will be recorded, and students will calculate the thermal conductivity (k) of their materials using the provided formula. The participant whose wall maintains the lowest temperature and has optimal thermal conductivity will be awarded.
● Event Guidelines: Participation Fee: Rs. 100 per participant.
● Wall Specifications: Dimensions: 30cm x 21cm. Material: Single or composite material. Maximum Thickness: 10mm.
● Testing Procedure: Students need to bring only a wall which they prepared by themselves at time of the event. Each participant’s wall will be placed in the closed chamber setup. A thermal load will be applied to one side of the wall. The temperature on both sides of the wall will be recorded after 15 minutes of testing. Participants will receive the temperature data immediately after their test. After the testing, students will use the recorded data to calculate the thermal conductivity (k) of their material using the formula provided.
● Calculation Task: Participants must calculate the thermal conductivity (k) of the material using the formula provided during the event. Submission of the calculated k-value is required for evaluation.
● Evaluation Criteria: The participant with the lowest temperature difference across the wall. Thermal conductivity (k) must be within acceptable ranges for the material used.
